This collection covers the various branches of the indology: art, archaeology, epigraphy, grammar, linguistics, literature (sanskrite and tamoule), traditional medicine, philosophy, religion, etc.

At the turn of the 19th century a new landmark was added to Chennai, the capital of the Madras Presidency. The historic date was 22nd March 1890 when Lord Connemara the then Governor of Madras State laid the foundation stone for the present Connemara Pubic Library to fulfill the long felt need for a standard library. Another red letter day was 5 December 1896 when the library named after Lord Connemara was formally opened. Since then, a century has passed and the library had become a part of history as much as a part of our lives continuously functioning till date.

The British Library has The 19th and early to mid- 20th century collection of Tamil materials is very important. Among the Oriental Collections manuscripts are two autograph items by Father Beschi, palm leaf manuscripts written by other European missionaries, also items from the Hugh Nevill collection. Among the India Office Library Tamil manuscripts is a copy of the Christian epic poem, Tembavani, by Father Beschi, written in the author's own hand in 1724.
